Police Pension: do you need to claim tax relief?
Public sector defined benefit scheme using Net Pay. Full tax relief applied automatically. No claim needed.
Good news: you already get full relief on your Police Pension contributions. Only contributions to a different, Relief at Source scheme (an old NEST or People's Pension pot, a personal pension or a SIPP) could be owed relief.

Police Pension tax relief questions
Do I need to claim tax relief on my Police Pension contributions?
No. Police Pension takes contributions from your pay before tax is calculated (a Net Pay arrangement), so you receive relief at your full marginal rate through payroll automatically. HMRC will reject a higher rate relief claim for these contributions.
Is there any situation where I could still be owed money?
Only if you also paid into a different scheme that uses Relief at Source - for example a previous employer's NEST or People's Pension scheme, or a personal pension or SIPP - while earning above the higher rate threshold. Those contributions can be claimed for the last four tax years.
What about earlier employers?
Use the calculator with the details of the Relief at Source scheme you paid into at the time. Our claim form lets you enter each employer separately and works out the relief per tax year.
