Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about claiming your pension tax relief.

Eligibility

How do I know if I'm eligible for additional pension tax relief?

You're likely eligible if you earn over £50,270 (higher-rate taxpayer) and contribute to a Relief at Source pension scheme like NEST, The People's Pension, or similar workplace pensions. Use our free calculator to check your eligibility in under 2 minutes.

What is a Relief at Source pension?

Relief at Source is a method where your pension contributions are taken from your pay after tax, and your pension provider claims 20% basic-rate tax relief from HMRC. Most workplace auto-enrolment pensions use this method. If you're unsure, check with your pension provider or HR department.

I complete Self Assessment—can I still use PensionReclaim?

If you complete Self Assessment, you should declare your pension contributions on your tax return instead. However, if you haven't claimed this relief in previous years' returns, you may be able to claim backdated relief by writing to HMRC.

Can I claim if I've changed jobs during the tax year?

Yes. Our claim form allows you to enter details for multiple employers across different tax years. As long as you were a higher-rate taxpayer and contributing to a Relief at Source pension, you can claim.

The Claim Process

How does the process work?

It's simple: (1) Use our calculator to check eligibility, (2) Purchase your Claim Pack for £99, (3) Fill in your details, (4) Download your personalised HMRC claim letters, (5) Sign and post to HMRC. We provide everything you need including pre-addressed envelopes.

How long does HMRC take to process claims?

Most claims are processed within 8-12 weeks. HMRC will either send a cheque to your address or, if you provide bank details, pay directly into your account. Complex claims may take longer.

How far back can I claim?

You can claim for the current tax year plus the four previous tax years. For example, in 2025/26 you can claim for tax years 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25, and 2025/26. The deadline for 2021/22 is April 2026.

Do you submit the claim to HMRC for me?

No. PensionReclaim is a document preparation service. We generate personalised claim letters and calculations, but you review, sign, and submit them yourself. This keeps you in control of your claim.

Money & Refunds

How much could I claim back?

The amount depends on your salary, pension contribution rate, and how many years you're claiming for. Typical claims range from £500 to £6,000+. For example, someone earning £80,000 contributing 5% to their pension could claim around £800 per year.

Why does the Claim Pack cost £99?

Our £99 fee covers the eligibility verification, personalised document generation, year-by-year calculations, and step-by-step guidance. Given the average claim is £2,500+, the service pays for itself many times over.

What is your money-back guarantee?

If HMRC rejects your claim for eligibility reasons, we'll refund your £99 in full. This applies when you've submitted unmodified documents and provided accurate information. See our full guarantee terms for details.

How will I receive my refund from HMRC?

HMRC typically sends refunds by cheque to your address, or by direct payment to your bank account if you include your bank details in the claim. The claim letter we generate includes space for your bank details.

Safety & Trust

Is this legitimate? It sounds too good to be true.

This is 100% legitimate. The right to claim additional pension tax relief is established under Section 192 of the Finance Act 2004. It's documented in HMRC's own guidance. The only reason this money goes unclaimed is that most people don't know about it.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We use industry-standard encryption, secure payment processing through Stripe, and never store your card details. Your personal information is used only to generate your claim documents. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Are you regulated or authorised by anyone?

PensionReclaim is a document preparation service, not a financial advisor or tax agent. We don't require FCA authorisation as we don't provide financial advice. We simply help you prepare documents to claim relief you're legally entitled to.
