How It Works

Three simple steps to reclaim your pension tax relief

1

Check Eligibility

Enter your salary and pension details. Our calculator instantly shows if you're owed money and how much.

2

Get Your Claim Pack

We generate your complete HMRC claim pack — pre-filled with your details, legal references, and calculations. Just check, sign, and post. Plus 1-2-1 support if you have any questions.

3

Receive Your Refund

Enclose your pension statements, then post your claim to HMRC or claim online. Allow 8-16 weeks by post; HMRC pays you via a tax calculation (P800).

Why Higher Earners Miss Out

When you contribute to a Relief at Source pension (like The People's Pension or Aviva), your provider only claims the basic 20% tax relief from HMRC.

But if you earn over £50,270, you pay 40% tax (or 45% above £125,140). You're entitled to the extra 20-25% relief, but you have to claim it yourself.

Most people don't know this, and HMRC won't tell you. That's why an estimated £1.3 billion goes unclaimed every year.

Example: Software Engineer on £80,000

Annual Salary£80,000
Pension Contribution (5%)£4,000/year
Relief Already Received (20%)£800
Additional Relief Owed (20%)£800/year
4-Year Backdated Claim£3,200

Your cost: £99 → Your refund: £3,200 → That's 32x return.

“Can't I Just Do This Myself?”

Yes, you can. Just like you can cut your own hair, file your own accounts, or fix your own boiler. Here's what DIY actually looks like:

DIY Route

  • Research which pension scheme you're on (relief at source vs net pay vs salary sacrifice)
  • Work out which pension statements and P60s HMRC needs as evidence for each year
  • Understand HMRC's rules on higher-rate relief calculations
  • Fill in Self Assessment tax return or write to HMRC with correct references
  • Wait. Chase. Hope you got it right. Fix mistakes if HMRC queries.

Estimated time: 3-5 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about pension tax relief claims

What is higher rate pension tax relief?
If you earn over £50,270 and pay into a Relief at Source pension (like People's Pension, Aviva, etc.), you only get 20% tax relief automatically. As a 40% taxpayer, you're entitled to an extra 20% - but you have to claim it from HMRC yourself. Most people don't know this.
How much can I claim back?
The average claim is £3,000-£4,000. You can backdate claims for the 4 most recent complete tax years (currently 2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25, 2025/26). The exact amount depends on your salary and pension contributions - use our free calculator to check.
Is this legitimate and legal?
Yes, 100%. This is your legal right under Section 192 of the Finance Act 2004. HMRC's own guidance confirms higher-rate taxpayers must claim the additional relief themselves. This is not a loophole - it's money you're legally owed.
How long does it take to get my refund?
HMRC aims to respond to online claims within 28 working days. Postal claims typically take 8-16 weeks, and longer between January and April. HMRC then issues a tax calculation (P800) and you have the money paid to your bank account through the HMRC app or your personal tax account, or receive a cheque. We never handle your money.
What pension schemes are eligible?
Relief at Source pensions are eligible: NEST, People's Pension, personal pensions and SIPPs, and most group personal pensions from Aviva, Scottish Widows, Legal & General, Royal London, Aegon, Standard Life and Fidelity (check your payslip - employers can run these as Net Pay). Net Pay schemes such as NOW: Pensions, Smart Pension, Cushon and public sector schemes, and Salary Sacrifice arrangements, are NOT eligible because they already give full relief.
Can't I just claim this from HMRC myself for free?
Yes - HMRC never charges, and we say so. What you pay us for is getting it right first time. HMRC found one in three DIY claims had the wrong amount, and since September 2025 it returns any claim that arrives without the right evidence. The £99 pack works out the relief the way HMRC does for each year, tells you whether each year belongs on a letter or on your Self Assessment return, produces the correctly worded claim for you to sign, and lists the exact statements to enclose. Typical claims are £1,500-£4,000, and the pack is covered by our money-back guarantee.
What if HMRC rejects my claim?
We offer a full money-back guarantee. If HMRC rejects your claim for eligibility reasons, we'll refund your £99 in full. We verify your eligibility before you pay to minimise this risk.
